At SDP, we’re people who help people

About Our Charity

After enduring years of conflict and turmoil, Afghanistan is in urgent need of recovery and reconstruction. The deep wounds of war have deeply affected countless lives, especially vulnerable groups such as poor women, widows, orphans, and the disabled. In the face of these daunting challenges, the Salamander Development Program (SDP) has emerged as a beacon of hope. As a dedicated local non-governmental organization (NGO), SDP is committed to providing essential assistance and support to those in need.

With a deep commitment to serving the most marginalized and disadvantaged members of society, SDP has embarked on a mission to address the multifaceted social and economic challenges they face. Our strategic focus covers several critical areas including school reconstruction, agricultural development, animal husbandry, vocational training, and handicraft promotion. By focusing our efforts on these key sectors, we aim to uplift communities, increase livelihoods, and sustain development in all provinces of Afghanistan, with a special emphasis on the western regions.

The SDP journey does not take place alone. We work in close consultation and cooperation with the United Nations, international aid agencies, and generous donors, and in coordination with government officials working for Afghanistan’s well-being. Through these partnerships, SDP seeks to leverage resources, expertise, and support to effectively alleviate the suffering and hardships endured by the people of this war-torn country.

As we embark on this noble endeavor, we are keenly aware of the enormity of the task ahead and the challenges that lie ahead. Nevertheless, we are driven by an unwavering sense of purpose, compassion, and determination to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. Together, with the steady support of our partners and the resilience of the Afghan people, we wish to build a brighter and more hopeful future for everyone.

In the spirit of solidarity and empathy, we invite others to join us in this journey of hope and transformation. Working together, we can build a more inclusive, prosperous, and resilient Afghanistan for future generations.

Background

Founder Statement

The SDP Organization, founded in 1998, emerged as a pivotal force in post-civil war Afghanistan, dedicating its efforts to the well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly women and children. Initially established with a clear mission, the institution received its activity license from the Ministry of Planning in Afghanistan, marking the official commencement of its transformative work.

In 2005, the SDP organization underwent a significant phase of institutionalization, being registered twice and securing a renewed activity license under the distinguished number 136. This reflected a commitment to regulatory compliance and a testament to its ongoing dedication to serving the people.

Throughout its journey, the SDP organization formed impactful collaborations with a diverse array of organizations, both national and international. Partnerships with entities such as WFP, UNDP, UNIFEM, UNOPS, MRRD, IRC, AWATT, ASGP USAID, GAGP (Japan Government), PRT (Herat), United States Army, INTERSOS (Italian organization), CVG (Italian organization), Provincial Government of All Western Region, Embassy of India, and ANCB have been instrumental in the success of its projects.

Proud of its role as a dependable partner, the SDP organization has continued its mission in collaboration with United Nations organizations, international NGOs, and generous donors. The organization has strategically positioned itself in the western region of Afghanistan, with operational offices in Herat province and Kabul, providing comprehensive coverage in provinces like Herat, Ghor, Farah, and Badghis.
